In All Under Heaven, the UN stands out as one of the only states to claim pre-Fall descent, believing they are the last remaining territory of a “planetary protectorate” of the “United Nations of Aerth”. When designing costume and character for the UN, I took great inspiration from the Eastern Roman Empire. Just like Eastern Rome, the UN in the 39th century is a rump state of a much greater empire that preserved much of the governmental system of its predecessor. In attempt to relate themselves to their glorious ancestors, the warriors of the 39th century UN sport non-functional centuries old night vision goggles, and adorn themselves with crudely drawn maps of Earth, a planet which has long been lost to memory.
