New York Fashion Week
2024 September
First of a group of fashion pieces for the New York Fashion Show. This portfolio is a mixture of European and Asian influences from history. In particular, I chose influences which are not commonly shown in modern media and brought them to the spotlight. Too often modern media focuses on fantasized variations of historial dress. This works to display historical pieces and mix them to create something new and beautiful.

This is a decorated armour set. Armour was historically a highly important form of fashion, highly expensive and often a representation of wealth and class. It is quite a shame that it is not more represented in modern fashion. This piece combines Mid-Ming dynasty scale armour, puffed and slashed pants, and a coat based off of the Jinbaori, a type of surcoat worn by Japanese samurai. The hat is based off of Renaissance felt hats from Germany and the Low Countries.

In particular, I chose influences which are not commonly shown in modern media and brought them to the spotlight. The sash is taken from the period in French history called the Directorate, where many government officials wore these toga-esque clothings. I combined this with German puff and slash on the shirt and the pants. Both are rarely depicted in media, and I chose them because I thought they contrast well. He wears a tophat based on a variation of the wide-brimmed helmets from the late Medieval period. Chinese synthetic silks were used in all designs.

A major part of renaissance German fashion was puffed and slashed clothing. Large and 'poofy', I thought it was very much similar to mukabaki, a type of historical Japanese 'chaps' made from the skin of deer and often worn in ceremonial situations. I combined the concept of mukabaki and slashed and puffed clothing in this piece to create a hybrid of east and western historical fashion.
A modern fusion of traditional Asian and contemporary fashion: The flowing, draped red top adds a sense of ceremonial grace, while structured, charcoal-toned fabric wraps the model in a protective, almost armor-like silhouette.
Metallic leg guards: Add a futuristic, warrior-like element, and the red shoes provide a pop of color that grounds the outfit.
Concepts: Cultural layering, protective elegance, and a juxtaposition of tradition with modernity.
